Sonic 2 was one of the most exciting shows to work on. The shots consisted of pure action with varied lighting environments, making each sequence unique.

 

Certainly it was no easy task. It was challenging to add realism to a “cartoon” character. Additionally, adding eye-pings, which are speculared highlights in the iris, was a new technique I learned. Despite being such a small task, it made a huge impact on the viewer’s perception of a character.

 

Another thing this project taught me very well was to render grooms. They can be quite heavy, and the look and lighting can change drastically upon pruning it or reducing LOD. Due to the complexity of the character and grooms, I also practiced several optimization techniques to achieve the cleanest output in the least render hours possible. Sonic cemented my industry pipeline learnings and workflows, such as understanding various tools and why they are needed. It also gave me great exposure on multitasking with rendering and comping multiple elements together such as Characters, Env & FX. This laid a solid foundation for the projects ahead.
